THE A WORD WINS BEST SCRIPTED FORMAT AT
C21’S FORMAT AWARDS

SEASON TWO OF THE BBC ONE ADAPTATION GOES INTO PRODUCTION

FIRST LOOK IMAGE AND DETAILS OF SEASON 2 REVEALED

On Saturday 1 April, The A Word was awarded the Prize for Best Scripted Format  at the C21 Format Awards in MIPTV, Cannes. The original drama created, written and directed by Keren Margalit  has been adapted with great success in the UK where it aired on BBC One  attracting an average of 5.5m viewers  and in Greece where it attracted a consistent 20% average audience share for Alpha TV.

The eagerly awaited second season  of the BBC One version has now gone into production and a first-look photo  has been revealed of the Hughes/Scott family.

Filming has begun in the Lake District and at Manchester’s Space Project in preparation for the return of the show this Autumn. The story picks up two years on and Joe, who is played by Max Vento (pictured centre with l-r Christopher Eccleston, Mollie Wright, Morven Christie and Lee Ingleby) is changing. Now age seven, he has begun to look at the world and find he doesn’t fit in.

Writer of the UK show, Peter Bowker explains “‘Autistic’ is a word Joe has heard but can’t yet understand. ‘Different’ is what he feels, and fears it might be something bad. It’s up to the whole family to help Joe make sense of who he is and his place in the world. But to do that, they must first be honest about themselves.”

The 6-part drama revisits the funny, messy, mixed-up lives of the Hughes and Scott families as they struggle to do their best as parents, carers, lovers… and to work out what’s really important in the face of nothing ever feeling normal.

The A Word is Fifty Fathoms and Keshet UK  production for BBC One. The series also transmits on SundanceTV in the US. Executive Producers are Lucy Richer for BBC, Patrick Spence, Peter Bowker and Marcus Wilson  for Fifty Fathoms  productions and Howard Burch, Avi Nir  and Keren Margalit  for Keshet. Jenny Frayn  is producer and Sue Tully  is lead Director.
