Canadian Entertainment Veteran Mark Rubinstein to Oversee New Keshet Canada Joint Venture
Today Keshet International (KI), the global distribution and production arm of Keshet Media Group, and veteran Canadian television executive Mark Rubinstein announced a joint venture to bring Keshet’s extensive slate of scripted and unscripted formats to the Canadian market, and to engage the local industry to develop, produce and co-produce original content. The announcement was made by Rubinstein and Keshet International’s Managing Director Alon Shtruzman, who brokered the deal.
Rubinstein, one of Canada’s top senior executives who has held former titles of President and CEO of Insight Sports and COO of Alliance Atlantis Broadcasting, will lead the joint venture in Canada to be known as Keshet Canada. The joint venture will have the rights to over 50 Keshet International properties, to be produced in the territory under the Keshet Canada banner.
“Keshet’s swift international growth in recent years is a testament to the company’s ability to transcend international borders with its innovative scripted and unscripted programming,” said Rubinstein. “I am looking forward to utilizing our extensive network of industry contacts to bring the same level of success to the Canadian market with existing KI properties as well as new content we develop in-house.”
”After launching shops in the UK and Australia, it is only natural to add Canada to our production and creative network. We are thrilled to bring Keshet’s catalogue to this exciting market that is home to an increasingly burgeoning entertainment industry. I have no doubt that with Mark’s vast experience we will soon become a prominent player in the Canadian TV landscape,” Shtruzman said.
KI has had recent success in closing deals in the Canadian market. Earlier this year in May, Canada’s Video Services Corp acquired the broadcast, DVD and VOD rights for Prisoners of War, Keshet’s acclaimed drama off of which Showtime’s Emmy® and Golden Globe® award winning show Homeland is based. Both seasons of Prisoners of War will appear on iTunes Canada and DVD, and on Super Channel later in 2013.
The move to establish Keshet Canada continues Keshet International’s significant expansion around the world. Keshet Canada’s launch follows on the heels of the formation of Keshet Australia, a JV between KI and Australia’s Northern Pictures. Keshet Productions UK was formed in December 2012, headed by Alon Shtruzman. The management team is made up of established UK TV professionals including former Sky drama commissioner Sara Johnson as Head of Scripted Programming, and BAFTA winning producer Amelia Hann as Head of Scripted Programming.
