London/Paris- Atlantique Productions, the leading French producer of high-end, English-language drama series for the global market, and Keshet Productions UK, the London-based indie established by Israel’s Keshet International (KI), part of the Keshet Media Group, have announced a partnership to develop a new TV drama series.
Crater Lake (8 x 52 mins), billed as ‘a life-affirming, character-driven show about death’, was created by Academy Award-nominated screenwriter (MICE; Beaufort), author, journalist and TV executive Ron Leshem.
Atlantique CEO Olivier Bibas and creative director Patrick Nebout will act as executive producers on Crater Lake, with Keshet Media Group CEO, Avi Nir, KI CEO Alon Shtruzman and Keshet Productions UK head of scripted, Sara Johnson, serving as executive producers for Keshet.
Renaissance man Ron Leshem has won accolades in several fields, including for his first novel, Beaufort, which won the Sapir Prize for Literature — Israel’s top literary award. He also co-authored the film version of Beaufort, which was Oscar nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category and won Leshem the Berlin International Film Festival’s Silver Bear for Best Director. He also created and co-wrote spy drama MICE/The Gordin Cell, which was recently acquired by NBC and is being remade for the US as Allegiance.
Olivier Bibas, CEO of Atlantique Productions, said: “Atlantique Productions aims to become one of Europe’s leading studios for international TV series and, with the resounding successes of shows such as Borgia and Transporter, the foundations to carry out this goal are now well set. Keshet — one of the most creative and dynamic partners in global scripted entertainment — will help us in our mission to bring to life the best new content for international audiences. We are very happy be co-developing with Keshet this unique, thought-provoking TV show.”
Sara Johnson commented on the deal: “We are delighted to have partnered with Olivier, Patrick and Atlantique on this unique and exciting production from the wonderful Ron Leshem. As we continue to make headway with some strong UK co-productions, this partnership presents the perfect opportunity to make our first move into Europe.”
Atlantique Productions has a strong track record in producing premium primetime drama for global audiences. The deal with Keshet Productions UK is the first move in its strategy to diversify its range of productions and forge new alliances with independent producers from around the world to develop and produce high-end dramas for the international market.
KI established Keshet Productions UK in December 2012, putting former Sky and La Plante Productions executive Sara Johnson in the role of executive producer and head of co-productions. Through this and other Keshet group outposts, KI is also committed to distributing high-quality TV formats. Israel — with Keshet in the lead, co-producing eight series this year — has become the largest exporter of scripted formats to the US.
